A bullet from the pistol of a disgruntled civil rights activist, Tyrone Gregory, found its mark, cutting short the life and reign of a man who had come to symbolize oppression for many. Gregory, who perished in the ensuing scuffle, became a martyr for the fractured cause of liberty, his act a desperate coup de grace to a regime that had already sown the seeds of its dissolution. ### The Resurgence of the South Within hours of Wilson's demise, the Confederate states seized the opportunity to rise anew. With clandestine support from British intelligence--still smarting from the loss of its colonies over a century earlier--the newly reformed Confederate States of America declared independence. It was a resurgence steeped in Democratic ideology, understood to be a British colonial puppet, structured upon the foundations of an archaic past that much of the world had left behind.
