They all look exhausted and dispirited, and Reza seems to be the only one slightly trying to make conversation. Reza wears a back brace, leg casts and an adult diaper, which is visible under his open hospital gown. Anneliese has a suprapubic catheter coming from her abdominal area, and her legs and face are badly scarred. Susan is the one with the most complicated wheelchair, accommodating her double hip spica cast and a window for gastrostomy, urostomy and colostomy. ANNELIESE: (sighing) I hate this place. I never thought I would get injured in a car accident. SUSAN: (snorting) Try breaking both your hips and pelvis while working out. That's what you call bad luck. REZA: (shrugging) At least we're still alive, right? ANNELIESE: (rolling her eyes) Easy for you to say, Reza. You're the one with the most optimistic prognosis. ANNELIESE: (rolling her eyes) You're not helping, Reza. Reza falls silent, feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. He glances at both women, feeling a sense of sympathy and attraction towards each of them. But he doesn't know how to approach them without sounding insensitive or insincere. REZA: (softly) I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound... flippant. It's just that... maybe we should try to find some humor in this situation. Otherwise, we'll go crazy. SUSAN: (nodding) He'...

Do you have any idea what it's like to have to rely on this contraption just to go to the bathroom? REZA: (sympathetically) I can't even imagine, Susan. But you have to admit, it's kind of like having your own little spaceship, right? SUSAN: (smiling despite herself) I guess that's one way to look at it. ANNELIESE: (sarcastically) Oh, lucky us. We get to live in our own personal spaceships while the rest of the world moves on without us. REZA: (sincerely) I know it's tough, you guys. But we can still have a good life, even if it looks a little different than we imagined. (pause) And hey, at least we have each other, right? SUSAN: (nodding) That's true. There's a moment of comfortable silence before Reza leans forward. REZA: (uncomfortably) Can I ask you guys something? (looking back and forth between them) Do you ever think about getting back out there? Dating, I mean? Anneliese and Susan exchange glances, seeming surprised but not offended. SUSAN: (teasingly) Are you asking us out, Reza? REZA: (laughing nervously) No, no, I mean...well, maybe. But really, I just meant for you guys. ANNELIESE: (thoughtfully) I do sometimes. But who's going to want to date a girl with half a face and a robot voice? REZA: (empathetically) Someone who sees more than that, Anneliese. ANNELIESE (to Susan) I can't believe we're stuck in these damn things. My singing career is over. SUSAN (to Anneliese) Oh please, my business is suffering because of this. I'm barely able to go to work. REZA (awkwardly) Well, I'm just happy to be alive. And who knows, maybe we'll come out of this stronger than before. ANNELIESE (rolling her eyes) Sure, because people are just lining up to hire a singer with scars and a tracheostomy. SUSAN (nodding her head) And I'm sure my clients will understand why I can't physically meet with them. REZA (trying to lighten the mood) Well, if it's any consolation, you both still look as beautiful as ever. ANNELIESE (smiling weakly) Thanks, Reza. You're sweet. SUSAN (sarcastically) Oh yes, because that's what every woman wants to hear. "You're beautiful even though you're broken and useless." REZA (defensive) I didn't mean it like that. ANNELIESE (leaning in towards Reza) I know what you meant. And I appreciate it. You always know how to make me feel better. SUSAN (rolling her eyes) Oh please, Reza has been flirting with both of us since we got here. I'm surprised his diaper hasn't fallen off from all the attention he's giving us. REZA (embarrassed) I'm just trying to be friendly. ANNELIESE (teasingly) Well, you better decide who you like more because I don't share. SUSAN (smirking) And I don't settle for sloppy seconds. REZA (trying to lighten the mood) You think either of you have a shot at that new reality show "Bounce Back to Life"? Anneliese and Susan briefly glance at Reza but continue their serious conversation, ignoring his comment. ANNELIESE (wincing) I miss how things used to be, before the accident. And these (gestures towards her various tubes) are a constant reminder of what's happened. Reza continues to observe Anneliese and Susan, and his attraction to them becomes more evident as he sympathizes with their damaged features. REZA (enquiring) Have they told either of you the prognosis? Like, how long you'll have to endure...this? Anneliese looks at Susan, unsure of what to say. SUSAN (sighing) The doctors... they're not very optimistic. I just have to keep pushing through my rehab sessions, hoping for some progress. Reza nervously looks between Anneliese and Susan, feeling more uncomfortable with his own optimistic prognosis. He takes a deep breath, trying to think of a lighter conversation. REZA (smiling) Well, let's enjoy the sun while we can. Ladies, any preference on who I should shade first with this incredibly small umbrella? Anneliese and Susan chuckle.
