"My momma said you could help us find our way home." Arlynn took the paper and studied it with interest. It was a crudely drawn map, with a small red X marking a spot deep in the desert. "Why would your mother think that?" he asked the child. The girl shrugged. "She said you were kind and brave and could navigate the desert like no one else." Arlynn felt a strange sense of pride at these words. He may have been an oddity, but to this small family, he was a hero. "Well, I can certainly help you," he said, offering them a toothy grin. "But we should get you all something to eat and drink first. No sense in wandering the desert on an empty stomach." So Arlynn led the travelers to a nearby oasis, where they feasted on succulent dates and drank cool, refreshing water. As they ate, Arlynn regaled them with stories of his adventures in the desert, of narrow escapes from hungry vultures and daring battles with giant snakes. The travellers listened in awe, their eyes wide with wonder. When they were finished, Arlynn led the way through the winding sand dunes, his massive frame forging ahead like a bulldozer. With Arlynn by their side, the travelers felt confident and cared for. He protected them from the scorching sun and guided them past treacherous cliff drops. Finally, after a long day's journey, they reached their destination. It was a small encampment hidden in a rocky alcove, filled with warm fires and kind faces.
