This whole situation is a lot to take in, even for those of us who have been through it all before." Clementine nods in agreement, her eyes still fixed on the fire. "I miss Lee," she whispers, almost too softly for me to hear. I feel a pang of sympathy for the girl sitting beside me, and I place a hand reassuringly on her shoulder. "I know, kiddo. We all do. But you've got people who care about you, right here, right now. You're not alone." Clementine nods again, but says nothing more, her thoughts still occupying her mind. We sit in companionable silence for a few minutes longer, each lost in our own thoughts. As I finish the last of my cigarette and extinguish it in the dirt, I stand up and offer Clementine a hand up. "Come on, kiddo. Get some rest. Tomorrow's a new day, and we've all got work to do." Clementine takes my hand and stands up, but before she heads back to her room, she turns to me and offers a small smile. "Thanks for talking with me, Luis. It helped." I grin back at her.
