CHATBOT: INT. HAWKINS MIDDLE SCHOOL GYM - NIGHT The school gym is decked out for the annual Halloween dance. Kids dressed in '80s costumes dance awkwardly to cheesy hits while chaperones look on. Max, dressed as Madonna, talks with Lucas, dressed as Ghostbuster, near the punch bowl. MAX (stirring punch) So, your Ghostbuster costume, huh? Kinda cool. LUCAS (smiling) Yours is amazing too. But I wish Eleven were here. We're incomplete without her. Max sighs in agreement when suddenly the lights flicker ominously. MAX What the... LUCAS (alarmed) Did you feel that? The air grows colder, and the light flickers again. Max shivers, feeling a strange force inside her. LUCAS (CONT'D) Max, are you okay? Max grabs her head in pain, disoriented. MAX I don't know... Something's wrong. The punch bowl's surface ripples, as if an unseen force is trying to break through. The Mind Flayer sensed my desires and gave me that power. The group looks on in shock, unable to believe what they're hearing. DUSTIN You're lying, Max! We don't believe you. MAX (evil grin) Believe what you want, but it's true. I willingly became part of the hive mind. You see, all these years, I envied you and your friends, the adventures you've had... and now it's my turn to be in control. Lucas, on the verge of tears, gazes into Max's blackened eyes. LUCAS Max, this isn't you. We care about you. You're not alone. Please fight this. Max's eyes flicker, and for a moment, her true inner self is visible. The lights flicker above her as she swerves into the gymnasium. INT. GYMNASIUM - NIGHT The gym is dimly lit and filled with FLOATING DUST PARTICLES. Max skids to a stop and removes her headphones. She notices the atmosphere has changed; it's colder and darker. MAX Hello? Anyone here? Max hears a faint WHISPERING, echoing throughout the gym. It's indistinct, and she can't quite make out what it's saying. MAX Guys? If this is a joke, it's not funny. The whispering grows louder. Max backs away, glancing around, trying to find the source. The dust in the air starts to form a recognizable pattern. Max's eyes grow wider as she realizes that the particles are forming the shape of the MIND FLAYER. It towers, dark and menacing, over her. The Mind Flayer's tendrils reach out, surrounding Max as it draws closer. Max tries to flee, but her fear immobilizes her. She begins to SCREAM, but it's swallowed by the sound of the Mind Flayer's screeching. Its tendrils snake around her neck and arms. Suddenly, a burst of energy overtakes her and Max's body goes limp. The Mind Flayer's tendrils retract as her body floats in mid-air. Max's eyes snap open, revealing dark, depthless pools - the Mind Flayer now possesses her. INT. HAWKINS MIDDLE SCHOOL - NIGHT Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, and Will are searching the dimly lit hallway. They hear Max's distant, muffled scream. MIKE (Max's scream) That's Max! WILL The Mind Flayer. It's found her. LUCAS (frantically) We have to find her before it's too late! ELEVEN (determined) I'll try to track her. Eleven holds out her hand, focusing her powers. Her nose starts to bleed, but it's not working. ELEVEN (CONT'D) I can't. It's...it's blocking me. The group races to the gym, following the sound of Max's scream. INT. GYMNASIUM - NIGHT The kids burst into the gym just as Max floats back to the ground. LUCAS Max! Max's body stills, and she turns to face the group, but her empty eyes reveal that she is no longer in control. MIND FLAYER (Through Max) Do you finally see? You cannot stop me. The five friends stare at Max helplessly, knowing that they have to save her - before it's too late. FADE OUT.

Lucas paces, worried, while Eleven focuses her energy on Max's mind to keep the Mind Flayer at bay. MAX (smirking) You know... You're wasting your time. I wanted this. LUCAS (angry) You're lying. The Mind Flayer's messing with us. Max smiles sinisterly at the confusion in her friends' eyes. MAX I've always felt... an emptiness. A darkness inside me. When the Mind Flayer found me, I finally felt... alive. MIKE (disbelief) But... you're one of us. You're part of the party. MAX How long have I really been a part of this gang? Deep down, I was waiting for a chance to be something more. To taste real power. ELEVEN (shaking with the effort, but holding on) I won't let you hurt our friends. Max's eyes dart to Eleven, an evil glint in them. An unsettling grin forms on her face. MAX Oh, El. You think your powers make you special? Just wait until you see what I can do. Suddenly, Max's head snaps back, her eyes rolling as if fighting with the extra presence within her. Briefly, Max looks at Lucas, desperation in her eyes. MAX (whispering) Lucas... help me. LUCAS (panicked) Max... I know you're still there. Fight it! Eleven's energy wavers, and Max's eyes are once again consumed by darkness. MIND FLAYER (through Max) Thank you for your moment of weakness, girl. You gave me the opening I needed. The Mind Flayer gains back control and sends Eleven flying against the wall, causing her to lose consciousness. The group looks in horror at their now-fallen friend. MIND FLAYER (through Max) Now... watch as this world is consumed by darkness. The girl could not protect you before, and she cannot protect you now. They stare at Max, grasping the truth - that perhaps the Mind Flayer was amplified by her hidden darkness. Mike looks to Will, Dustin, and Lucas, determination fueling his words. MIKE We have to save her. We have to save Max from herself... and the Mind Flayer. The four friends lock eyes, knowing they must face their darkest challenge yet. FADE OUT.
