Lt. Celeste Mannigan is in military hospital, with her right arm and left leg missing, blown off by an explosion. There are plenty of wounded people, mostly men, in various conditions on other beds. While nurses and doctors are busy, Celeste, struggling, puts on her military uniform, adorned now with Purple Heart, takes the crutch in her remaining hand, and begins hopping out. As she passes other soldiers on her way, she, on habit, tries to salute, but doesn't even know how to do it and wonders if there are official instructions on that for people in conditions like hers. Celeste tries to get to colonel Angus Rains, since she has a feeling there is a plot to kill him, but is not allowed by guards.
