CHATBOT: Comparison of Mobility Levels, Necessary Adjustments, Use of Assistive Devices and Ability to Accomplish Daily Tasks for Caroline Hertig, Celestine Weeks and Franchette Fappier Introduction Caroline Hertig, Celestine Weeks, and Franchette Fappier are all young, active women with spinal cord injuries. Each individual's injury and subsequent mobility abilities differ depending on the location of the spinal cord injury. This report will provide an in-depth comparison of their mobility levels, necessary adjustments to daily life, use of assistive devices, and ability to accomplish daily tasks. Mobility Levels Caroline Hertig has a spinal cord injury at level T1, which is the first thoracic vertebra. With a T1 injury, there is likely full neck and upper extremity mobility. At this level, Caroline would have paraplegia, with paralysis impacting her trunk and lower extremities. Celestine Weeks' spinal cord injury is at level T5, which is the fifth thoracic vertebra. Similar to Caroline, Celestine would have paraplegia and full neck and upper extremity mobility. However, her level of trunk control would be slightly less impaired compared to Caroline, due to the lower location of her injury. Franchette Fappier has a spinal cord injury at level L3, which is the third lumbar vertebra. This level of injury results in partial paraplegia, affecting the lower extremities with a higher likelihood of regaining some function. Necessary Adjustments Caroline, with her T1 spinal injury, may face challenges in maintaining upright balance due to affected trunk control. Necessary adjustments include learning new strategies for sitting, transferring to different surfaces, and using adaptive equipment to aid mobility and functioning. Celestine, with her T5 injury, will also need to make adjustments in daily life similar to Caroline. However, given her slightly higher level of trunk control, she may experience a slightly easier time adapting to new sitting and transfer techniques. Franchette's L3 spinal injury presents different challenges, as she may gradually regain some lower extremity function over time. Adjustments will focus on strengthening remaining muscles and working on mobility with the aid of assistive devices such as braces or crutches.
