Our story takes place in the bustling post-cyberpunk urban landscape of NeoKropolis, where digital AI avatars have seamlessly intermingled with human society to become an integral aspect of daily life. Adapting to this new reality, most of the citizens wear VR and AR goggles as if they were a mere extension of their attire, allowing them to experience the synthesized world and interact with these AI beings or "tangible holograms" in real-time. Through the eyes of the narrator, we witness the various ways AI avatars assist the residents of NeoKropolis. From offering profound advice to teaching complex subjects, it is evident that these virtual citizens have made a significant impact on human society. The AI avatars, being fully aware of their artificial nature, have found pride in helping their human counterparts, fostering a mutualistic coexistence. However, not everyone is pleased by the tight embrace of technology. A once-prominent fringe subculture, the Luddite Anarchists, deems this dependence on technology as destructive to the very essence of humanity. Despite their vast numerical disadvantage, they fiercely criticize society's reliance on AI, claiming it "robs the human species of its most defining characteristics." Their acts of protest range from simply refusing to wear AR goggles to more extreme measures, occasionally involving destruction of AI-related infrastructures. Our protagonist, Alina Winters, is a renowned journalist who is assigned to cover a story about the Luddite Anarchists after a recent AI data center bombing. As she investigates the radical subculture, she finds herself questioning her own beliefs about the role of AI avatars throughout human society.
