In our alternate history, the bloodshed in Tiananmen Square did not serve to quell the protests, as it did in reality. Instead, it galvanized a broader revolutionary movement. Images of the massacre, captured and disseminated by foreign journalists, spread like wildfire across China and the globe, igniting widespread outrage and further emboldening those demanding change. 7.2. The Emergence of a New Revolutionary Coalition In the aftermath of the crackdown, a revitalized coalition emerged, bringing together dissatisfied citizens from across the Chinese social, economic, and ideological spectrum. This movement--which came to be known as the Second Xinhai Revolution--shared its name with the 1911 uprising that ultimately led to the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China. The Second Xinhai Revolution was spearheaded by an unlikely alliance of reform-minded CCP officials, pro-democracy activists, labor organizers, and even disillusioned members of the military. A charismatic and unifying figure soon emerged to lead the coalition: General Liu Ming, a decorated PLA officer who had become disillusioned with the CCP's authoritarianism and sought to restore the promise of the original Xinhai Revolution. 7.3.
