The Japanese, under Emperor Taisho, saw an opportunity to gain influence in China and spread democracy and anti-colonial sentiment throughout East Asia (Akira Iriye, "Across the Pacific: An Inner History of American-East Asian Relations," New York: Harcourt, Brace &World, 1967). Japanese support for both the revolutionaries and Qing loyalists allowed for the eventual success of the Xinhai Revolution and the establishment of new sovereignties and states in the region.
