Little did she know that her life would take a far darker turn. On what began as a typical school day, gunshots erupted in the halls of her school, causing panic and fear to grip the student body. Yaqdea could barely think as she scrambled for any possible shelter, a locked classroom or an empty closet. Unfortunately, she could not outrun the inevitable, and with a single gunshot, her young life was tragically ended. The school shooting in Coast City quickly made national news, and a wave of mourning swept over the community. Yaqdea's devastated family and friends cried out for retribution and justice, but they knew deep down that even justice would not bring her back. As her soul floated in the void between life and death, Yaqdea wished desperately for a second chance - anything for a chance at life again. It was then that Nekron, the Lord of the Dead, sensed her desire and approached her with a twisted offer. In exchange for her eternal loyalty, Yaqdea would be given the power of the dead and the means to make her wish a reality. Blinded by her yearning to live, Yaqdea accepted the offer without hesitation, unknowingly signing a pact with the malevolent deity. With the darkness closing around her, Yaqdea emerged from the other side as the first Black Lantern, a corpse reanimated to fulfill Nekron's nefarious goals. The Lord of the Dead gifted her with a Black Lantern Ring, granting her powers beyond her wildest dreams. As the body of the first Black Lantern breathed its first unnerving breath, the residents of Coast City slept uneasily, unaware of the new threat that had emerged in their city. Back in the world of the living, Yaqdea struggled with her new existence.
