Growing up, Kwame was always treated as an outcast, far removed from the life of luxury his siblings enjoyed. James promised him a high position in his successful company when the time was right. When James suddenly dies leaving the company to Kwame's older half-brother Sibusiso, however, Kwame is cast out. Instead of the top corporate position he was promised, Kwame is given a position as a junior manager. He accepts the role with an insidious plan brewing in his mind. Enraged by the betrayal and the lifetime of inequality, Kwame is determined to acquire what he believes is rightfully his - total ownership of the Van Graan Corporation. Kwame's Machiavellian scheme starts by pitting company members against one another, as he sees the internal discord as providing the perfect opportunity for him to rise. Using his keen intellect and charm, he manipulates co-workers to uncover their secrets and weaknesses, using them to further escalate rifts within the company. As members of the company, like pawns on a chessboard, begin to crumble under the tensions he created, Kwame engineers a series of scandals and catastrophes to slowly take out his half-siblings one by one, leaving them bereft of any power. During his ascent, Kwame encounters Naledi, an ambitious young woman who becomes an unwitting pawn in his game.
