"Thanks for staying back, David," Stella says, as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened. "You can go now. See you tomorrow." Feeling bewildered and uneasy, David heads home, his mind reeling from the strange encounter. Deep down, he knows that something very strange is going on and he's unsure if he wants to find out what it is.

She doesn't say why, but David figures why not. At closing time, a couple of women David recognises as friends of Stella's, all in their fifties or so, come in and Stella greets them effusively.

CHATBOT: "David, why don't you go to the back and get started on cleaning up?" Stella suggests. "I'll be with you in a little while." David nods and heads to the back as the women settle at a nearby table. He can hear their muffled voices and laughter as he begins to clean the dishes. After a few minutes, Stella comes into the back and walks up to him. "David, I was wondering if you'd be interested in trying something new," she says, her voice low and hypnotic. David's heart begins to race. He's always been a little nervous around Stella, especially when she uses her hypnotic powers on him. "What do you mean?" he asks, feeling his body start to relax. "Just a little experiment," Stella says, leaning in close. "I want to see how deep I can put you under. Are you willing to try?" David nods slowly. He's intrigued, even though part of him is scared. He trusts Stella, though - she's always been good to him, and he knows she would never do anything to hurt him. "Good," Stella murmurs. "Just relax, David. Let your mind go blank and focus on my voice." David closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. He feels Stella's hand on his shoulder and her voice in his ear, soothing and hypnotic. He doesn't remember what she says, only that her words fill his mind and body with a deep sense of calm and relaxation. When he opens his eyes again, the women are gone and the cafe is dark and empty. Stella is beside him, smiling kindly. "How do you feel, David?" David blinks and shakes his head, trying to clear the fog from his brain. "I...I feel good," he says slowly. "Relaxed. Comfortable." Stella nods. "That's good. I think we're making progress." David isn't sure what she means, exactly, but he trusts her. He knows that whatever experiments they're doing are for a good cause. He's willing to let Stella lead him down whatever path she thinks is best. He just hopes he won't regret it in the end.

All he knows is that he needs to get away from her as quickly as possible.
