Shinji, Asuka, and Rei stand in the center, surrounded by the technological marvels of NERV. Above them, the giant figure of Unit-01 hangs in suspension. RITSUKO (via intercom) Shinji, the decision is yours. You can choose to accept Instrumentality, and all of humanity would merge into a single consciousness. Or you can reject it, and keep the harsh reality of the world as we know it. Shinji hesitates, his face torn between the two options. He clenches his fists, clearly conflicted. SHINJI I...I don't know what to choose. I'm scared of the pain that comes from being alone, but I also know that there's something beautiful in our individuality. ASUKA Just make a choice already, Shinji! You always do this, waffling back and forth. Why can't you just decide? Shinji turns to Rei, looking for support. REI Shinji, it's your decision to make and no one else's. But remember, you don't have to face the consequences of your choice alone. Gendo appears on a nearby screen, his face stern.
