She stands up and walks over to the window, peering out cautiously. ESTHER'S POV - OUTSIDE THE WINDOW We see The Kid standing in the backyard, waving to Esther and motioning for her to come outside. BACK TO SCENE Esther hesitates for a moment, but eventually she grabs her jacket and heads outside to join him. THE KID Hey, Esther! I wanted to show you something. He leads her over to a nearby shed, which has a padlock on the door. THE KID (CONT'D) I found this key in the grass. I think it might fit the lock. Esther looks a little uneasy. ESTHER I don't know if we should be doing this. THE KID Come on, Esther. It's just a shed. What's the worst that could happen? He unlocks the door and swings it open, revealing an array of gardening tools, wheelbarrows, and other equipment. THE KID (CONT'D) See? Nothing scary. But as they start to look around, they hear footsteps approaching from outside. THE KID (CONT'D) Uh-oh. We'd better go. He quickly shuts the door and they run back towards the orphanage. CUT TO: INT. ORPHANAGE KITCHEN - LATER THAT DAY Kate is in the kitchen, chopping vegetables for dinner, when she hears a loud crash from upstairs. She sets down her knife and rushes up to check on Esther. KATE Esther, are you okay? But when she reaches Esther's bedroom, she finds that it's been completely trashed. The dollhouse is smashed to pieces, the bed is overturned, and clothes and toys are scattered everywhere. KATE (CONT'D) Oh my god. What happened here? Esther is sitting on the floor, holding a broken porcelain doll and crying. ESTHER I don't know. Someone must have come in and done this. KATE Did you see anyone? Hear anything? Esther shakes her head. ESTHER No. I was just working on my dollhouse, and then I heard a noise. Kate wraps her arms around Esther and tries to comfort her. CUT TO: INT. SCHOOL - THE NEXT DAY The Kid and Esther are sitting in their classroom, nervously fidgeting in their seats. THE KID Do you think they suspect anything? ESTHER I don't know. But we can't keep doing things like this. THE KID I know. I just wanted to show you something cool. The teacher enters the room and starts the lesson, but The Kid and Esther can barely focus on anything. They're too busy worrying about getting caught. After class, they head out to the school yard, where The Kid pulls out his latest project: a small rocket made from a model kit. THE KID (CONT'D) Look at this! I built it all by myself. It's got a parachute and everything. Esther looks impressed but hesitant. ESTHER I don't know, The Kid. We've been getting into trouble lately. I don't want to get into any more trouble. THE KID Come on, Esther. It'll be fun. And besides, what's the worst that could happen? He lights the rocket's fuse, and they watch as it zooms up into the sky--only to come crashing back down onto the roof of the school. THE KID (CONT'D) Uh-oh. They watch in horror as the rocket causes a small explosion on the roof, sending smoke and debris flying. THE KID (CONT'D) We have to go. Now. They take off running before anyone can see them, but they know they're in big trouble this time. CUT TO: INT. ORPHANAGE - LATER THAT NIGHT Kate and Max are sitting in the living room, looking at security camera footage from the day before. They see The Kid and Esther sneaking out to the shed, then later running away from the school. KATE This doesn't look good, Max. We need to talk to them about this. MAX I agree. But we have to be careful. Esther's been through a lot. We don't want to push her too hard. Kate nods, looking concerned. CUT TO: INT. ORPHANAGE - THE NEXT DAY Kate and Max sit down with The Kid and Esther to have a talk. KATE Kids, we need to talk about what's been going on lately. We've noticed some concerning behavior from both of you. MAX We want to understand why you're acting out. Is there something we can do to help? The Kid and Esther look at each other, both feeling guilty but unsure of how to explain themselves. THE KID I'm sorry. We didn't mean to cause any trouble. We just wanted to have some fun.
