INT. BASE BRIEFING ROOM - NIGHT A steel-clad room bathed in the dim light of several monitors. Two high-ranking COMMANDING OFFICERS (COs) are engaged in a heated discussion behind the reflective glass of the briefing room, though their words are inaudible. CUT TO: Along the narrow corridor, adjacent to the room, JACK TURNER, early 30s, muscular and clean-cut, typical Navy SEAL demeanor, leans casually against the wall. He's fiddling with a dog tag, rolling it through his fingers. Across from him is ALEKSEI IVANOV, also in his 30s but with a stoic, Spetsnaz sharpness to his eyes. Both are in full combat gear, the symbols of their respective forces prominently displayed. JACK You ever miss it? The "normal" life? Aleksei tilts his head slightly, acknowledging the question. His English bears a noticeable Russian accent. ALEKSEI Every day, my friend. When I am zipping through Arctic waters or dropping from the sky, I think of simple things... the smell of borscht, my mother's voice. Jack nods, a hint of a smile crosses his lips. JACK Yeah, for me, it's barbecues. The laughter in my backyard, my kid sister beating me at cornhole... A silent moment passes as they both reflect. ALEKSEI You have a sister? JACK Yeah, Sarah. Spunky as they come. Headed to college soon. Wants to be a vet. And you? ALEKSEI Older brother. He's a mechanic. We rebuild Lada together when I am home. Jack lets out a soft chuckle. JACK A Lada, huh? Here I am putting together model airplanes with my nephew. ALEKSEI Simple pleasures of life, Jack. They are what keep us human amidst... all this. Jack nods in agreement. JACK When the world's just a chessboard. Except we're the pieces, not the players. ALEKSEI Da, exactly. But pieces with heart, my friend. And sometimes, we make our own moves. Pride and camaraderie spark in their eyes, an unspoken understanding of duty and sacrifice. Jack extends his hand, and Aleksei shakes it firmly. JACK I'd bet you're one tough player, Aleksei. Maybe one day, when this is all over... ALEKSEI We share a barbecue, eh? Or borscht, if you are so inclined. JACK And rebuild a car, maybe? I'm more a Mustang guy, though. ALEKSEI (laughs) We can arrange this. Their laughter is cut short as one of the COs exits the briefing room, signaling the end of their informal detente. CO Turner, Ivanov, let's move. Both operatives immediately stand at attention. Their personal reflections disappear behind a mask of professionalism as they follow the CO back into the briefing room for their mission details. The chess game was about to continue.
