[there would be dialogue in this story:] (When I was still in high school, people would sometimes call me "blind as a bat" - seeing as I was prone to tripping over books almost all the time. But if they called my girlfriend - Emily - "blind as a bat", they'd be right - because she's...well, she's part bat. She relies on her sense of hearing to sense the world around her - as her ears were the same as those on all kinds of bats. Now, before I get into more detail, let me tell you about how I first met Emily - which was when I was lost in an abandoned mineshaft and tripped on a stalagmite, right into her chest.)

Me: Ouch! Oh, sorry, I didn't see you there. Emily: It's okay, I should have been more alert. Are you alright? Me: Yeah, just a little bruised. Thanks for breaking my fall. Emily: No problem. I'm Emily, by the way. Me: I'm Mike. Thanks for helping me out of that mineshaft. Emily: No problem at all. I actually live here, in the abandoned mines. Me: Really? That's pretty cool. Why do you live here? Emily: I'm part bat, so I feel more at home in dark, quiet places. And I use echolocation to get around. Me: That's fascinating. Do you mind if I ask you more about your bat side? Emily: Not at all. I'm used to people being curious. Plus, I think you're cute, so I'll answer your questions. Me: Thanks. I must say, you have the most beautiful ears I've ever seen. Emily: *giggles* Thanks, that's a first. Most people are weirded out by them. Me: Well, I think they're amazing. And so are you. Emily: Aww, thanks, Mike. You're not too bad yourself. And that's how Emily and I first met. We've been together ever since, and I wouldn't want it any other way. She may be part bat, but to me, she's just the most special girl in the world.
