INT. JANE'S LIVING ROOM - DAY Jane, a 16-year-old girl with long brown hair, is sitting on the couch with Izzy, an 8-year-old girl with Down syndrome, ADHD, shaken baby syndrome, and cerebral palsy. They communicate using sign language. Molly-Rose Ling, a 12-year-old girl, and Aaron Ling, her 14-year-old brother, enter the room. JANE Hey guys, come join us! Izzy and I were just watching some cartoons. MOLLY-ROSE (excitedly) Cartoons? I love cartoons! AARON What's up, Jane? Hey, Izzy! What are you guys watching? IZZY (signing) Hi Molly, hi Aaron! We're watching my favorite show, "Adventure Squad." MOLLY-ROSE (sitting next to Jane) Oh, I love that show too! Can we watch it together, Jane? JANE Of course, the more the merrier! They all settle down and start watching the cartoon. However, Molly-Rose starts whispering to Aaron, giggling and pointing at Izzy. IZZY (looking hurt and confused) (signing) What are they saying, Jane? JANE (looking concerned) (signing) I'm not sure, Izzy. Let me go and find out. Jane pauses the show, walks over to Molly-Rose, and Aaron. JANE (slightly frustrated) What's going on, Molly? Why were you whispering and laughing? MOLLY-ROSE (slightly defensive) Oh, we were just making a joke about Izzy. I didn't mean any harm. AARON Yeah, it was just harmless fun. Izzy knows we're joking, right? Jane takes a deep breath to calm herself before signing to Izzy. JANE (signing) Izzy, Molly and Aaron were making a joke, but it hurt your feelings. They didn't mean it to be mean, but it's important to express how we feel. IZZY (signing, with tears in her eyes) But why did they laugh at me, Jane? JANE (signing) Sometimes people don't understand how their words can affect others, Izzy. Let's talk to them about it and make sure they understand. Jane walks back to Molly-Rose and Aaron, with Izzy following behind. They all sit down together. JANE (sincerely) Izzy is my dear friend, and she deserves to be treated with respect, just like anyone else. Making jokes at her expense hurts her feelings, even if you didn't mean any harm. Please remember that. MOLLY-ROSE (looking guilty) You're right, Jane. I'm sorry, Izzy. I didn't realize how much it would hurt you. You're an amazing friend, and I shouldn't have made fun of you. AARON (regretful) Yeah, I'm sorry too, Izzy. It was thoughtless, and I promise it won't happen again. IZZY (signing, smiling) Thank you for saying sorry. Friends don't make friends feel sad. Let's keep watching cartoons together and have fun. They all resume watching the show, now with a newfound understanding and respect for each other. FADE OUT.
