INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY Jane, Sam, and Aaron Ling are standing in the hallway, chatting and laughing. JANE So, any plans for this weekend, guys? SAM I don't know yet. Maybe catch a movie or something. AARON LING Sounds cool. I heard there's a new superhero movie in theaters. JANE Awesome! Count me in, guys. I could use a break from all this school drama. They continue walking down the hallway, passing fellow students who are buzzing with excitement. AARON LING Hey, have you heard about that announcement we're supposed to have today? SAM Yeah, something about a new student joining our school. JANE I wonder who it is. Hope they're cool. They reach the entrance to the school auditorium, where a number of students are already gathered. JANE (Giggling) Looks like everyone's here. Let's find some seats. They enter the auditorium, searching for empty seats. Finally, they find a row towards the back and settle in. SAM I hope this new student can handle the gazillion questions they're going to get bombarded with. AARON LING I agree. It must be tough being the new kid, especially if you stand out in some way. JANE Yeah, people can be so judgmental sometimes. We should make an effort to be welcoming. The lights dim in the auditorium, and the principal steps onto the stage, holding a microphone. PRINCIPAL Ladies and gentlemen, can I have your attention, please? It's time to introduce a new member of our school community. Please welcome... Jane, Sam, and Aaron Ling lean forward, eager to see the new student. PRINCIPAL ...Ruben! Everyone claps politely as a girl with short hair and a friendly smile walks onto the stage. She waves at the audience. JANE (Whispering) Wait, Ruben is a girl? SAM (Whispering) Yeah, I heard her mom chose that name for her. It's pretty unique, right? AARON LING (Whispering) Well, one thing's for sure, she seems confident. Look at how she owns the stage. The principal continues to speak about Ruben's achievements and asks her to say a few words. Ruben steps up to the microphone. RUBEN Thank you, everyone, for the warm welcome. I'm excited to be a part of this school and get to know all of you. The students cheer, some louder than others. JANE (Smiling) You know what, guys? I'm liking Ruben already. SAM Absolutely. Let's make her feel at home and show everyone that diversity is what makes our school so special. AARON LING Couldn't agree more. Let's go introduce ourselves after the assembly. They stand up, applauding along with their fellow students, ready to welcome Ruben to their school with open arms.
