For half an hour, she had been practicing ollies, but she just couldn't get her right foot to slide the way it was supposed to. Several times, she had lost her balance and stumbled forward off the deck. Sophia needed a break. 2 The old parking lot had become a magnet for the neighborhood kids who liked to skate, even though it was mostly just a flat surface.But no one hassled them here. 3 Sophia watched her friend Braxton doing flips. "Too bad he doesn't have a better place to practice," she thought. Then she had an idea. 4 "Braxton!" yelled Sophia, and waved at him. 5 Braxton rolled to where she sat and asked, "What's up?" 6 She explained her idea, and Braxton nodded excitedly. Soon,he had the other skaters gathered around them, and Sophia shared her plan. She added, "The more parents and business owners that we can get involved, the more chance we have of succeeding." 7 For the next two weeks, the skaters worked to put the plan into action. Each of them had spoken with his or her parents about the empty lot and what they hoped could be done with it. The skaters had also walked door-to-door, visiting the businesses that didn't like skateboarders hanging around near their storefronts. They explained the plan and how it would benefit the businesses. 8 Sophia had printed flyers detailing their plan, including a date when they could address the city council, and the children passed these out to everyone they spoke with. They encouraged anyone who could make it to attend the city council meeting. 9 When the date finally arrived, Sophia couldn't believe the turnout at city council chambers. She recognized many of her friends' parents,and at least half the business owners they spoke with were there, too. 10 At last, Sophia could share her idea with the people who could make it real. 11 "Good evening, council members," Sophia began. "As a young person who enjoys skateboarding, the options for where I can skateboard are severely limited. As my friends and I have discovered,we are unwelcome along most of the sidewalks near our homes,especially wherever there are businesses. In the end, the empty parking lot on Charles Avenue has become the only place we have to skate.Most of the skaters will tell you that it's not an ideal place to skate, and my guess is that some of the parents will argue that it isn't a safe place to skate. I propose that the lot be purchased by the city and renovated to be the city's first skate park." 12 For the next hour, parents and business owners took turns explaining their support for Sophia's idea. When a vote was taken,the council approved the skate park, 7-2. Sophia and the other skaters cheered. The abandoned parking lot would soon become a well-maintained skate park!
